WHO AM I?

A million sperms tracked an ovary, only one hit the target and that came out to be me. I was instantly labeled, given a gender, a nationality, a caste and a social status. So, who am I?

I have listed below a few explanations through which I have tried to define myself:

  1. Psychologists say that I am an ‘INTJ’ – introvert, intuitive, thinking and judging person. They say I am a ‘Type A’ person who unduly gets stressed and hence a They take me through a battery of tests like – the 5 traits, Rorschach test and Johari window to give my exact definition. So, who am I?

  1. Quantum Physicist says that I am made up of particles – photons, protons, neutrons, electrons, vibrating at a particular frequency. They claim that I am a wave function dying out in one universe to be born in another in this multiple universe world, which is all happening in the ever present NOW, which my mind constructs as – past, present and future. So, who am I?

3. Adhi Shankara says that there are four states in life:

  • The dreamless state where there is no ‘I’ ness (deep sleep)
  • The dream state where I can see ‘I’ in multiple forms (REM state)
  • The waking state in which I am writing this blog to you and
  • The state of ‘Brahman’ where ‘Maya’ dissolves and only ‘Advaitha’ (non-duality) remains.

Shankara claims that the objective of life is to reach this state, so, who am I?

  1. Buddha says that I am stuck in a myriad of mirrors. I mirror the genes of my million ancestors. I mirror social media, authors, friends and associates. I am trapped in a mirror and need to use ‘Sila, Samaadhi and Panna’ to come out of this trap.

Even Elon Musk says that we are in a computer game stuck in a matrix with an algorithm working through us where the rules and codes are being passed down from one player (generation) to the next and the winner is the one who can come out of this game. That is get ‘Moksha’. So, who am I?

  1. Rene Descartes and western philosophers say that the objective of man is to reach the heaven and touch Gods. You have to be the Prometheus who steals fire from the heaven. To achieve this you are given a wonderful device, the brain, with which you have to work out and tap the mysteries of the universe. Ergo Cognito De Sum, I think therefore I am. So, who am I?

  1. Scientists like Dr Pearl mutter state that almost 60% of us is bacteria. This bacterium stays besides in our human gut. They in-turn have a one to one communication with the brain. These guys decide your moods, your hormonal structure and whether you should have depression or not. So is bacteria my boss, who controls my destiny? So, who am I?

  1. Eckhart Tolle says that a pain body has possessed us and constantly keeps us worried, emotional and jumping from past to the future and future back to the past. We have to be the ‘observer’ and the ‘sakshi’ and not allow this entity to take us over. So you are the Vishnu, the watcher who needs to keenly observe the actions of Brahma, the creator, because it was you the Vishnu who brought forth the Brahma, making it your responsibility to tame him. So, who am I?

  1. This is a shocker. So long the world believed that schizophrenics are formed because of poor parenting. Not so! A virus, T.Gondi has been found in these Schizos. Where did these viruses come from? They came from cat stools. Why do these virus land up in a human host? The reason is, they have better lungs which possibly is a medium to prolong the longevity of these viruses. Wow! What a contract between T.Gondi and the cats to occupy the human brain and thus make them Schizophrenics just because they have better lung capacity. So am I a puppet whose strings are being pulled by the viruses? So, who am I?

  1. Every 7 years, every part of my body decays to be replaced by another part. Don’t believe me, look at your photographs at age zero, seven, fourteen, twenty one, twenty eight so on and so forth. Do they look the same? This is like a ship whose planks get periodically replaced till none of the planks are from the original ship. Now are the new ship and the old ship the same. Am I a person being occupied by several bodies in this life-time only to pass away?

SO, WHO AM I?

TONY vs BUDDHA

On the second week of September 2019, Savy and I quenched our longing to witness a Tony Robbins show in Singapore called ‘Unleash the Power Within’ (UPW).

On the third week of December, we went for a soft 10 day camp where we were imprisoned for 10 days and forced to watch our breathe in the outskirts of Chennai, titled ‘Vipassana’.

Listed below are a few of our observations:

UPW – This program is designed to pump your Adrenalin, take you to a peak state and equip you with tools to grab as much as you can from this ‘abundant world’. The prime objectives of life are – achievement, accomplishment, passion and power.

Vipassana – This program is designed to pull off the plug to unwind your stressed up ‘go-getter’ life and work on your compassion.

UPW – The air is surcharged with pumped up volunteers, high voltage music to juice you up and fire up all your cylinders. 9000 people, each spending lakhs attended the convention. Tony Robbins was a tad disappointed that many more outside were still not part of the seminar. When you are getting such valuable knowledge at such a ‘negligible price’ there was obviously no question of providing you with boarding, lodging or even a cup of tea.

Vipassana – About 100 men and 100 women came for this 10-day camp. Boarding and food was provided ‘free of cost’. Not a single paisa was demanded as a tuition fee. How could we pay a price? All the wealth that we had attained in our lifetime would not be enough to pay this fee.

UPW – The program was all about the mind (monkey). How to empower the monkey? How to make it attain outrageous goals? How to give a value based direction to the monkey and how to possibly transform the identity of the monkey into that of the gorilla? This program talked about how to achieve ‘peak states’ and create a ‘certainty’ in the monkey and make it walk on fire.

Vipassana – On the contrary this entire program talked about ‘dropping the monkey’. It made us realize how the monkey is the cause of misery and how it creates undue damage to our being. The course talked about the true meaning of ‘liberation’ that is – eliminating the monkey.

UPW – Tony Robbins explained how he had made huge sacrifices. He had fish poisoning (mercury poisoning) at atrocious levels, in-spite of which he was conducting the program. He was available only for 2 days in the 4 day event. The participants were never coerced to attend the full workshop. As a matter of fact many of them did not turn up on the last day and 25 percent of the time was allocated to promoting the upcoming workshops and also products of a few companies to which Tony was affiliated. Don’t people have to invest if they have to reach higher standards in life?

Vipassana – The sewaks and the trainers were with us from 4.30 am in the morning till 9.30 pm in the night. The participants had to mandatory attend the complete workshop, sit in excruciating positions and endure the torture of these ‘vicious assassins’. There was not an iota of promotion for the next event and on the last day the sewaks apologetically mentioned of a one day children’s workshop which was to be conducted the next day.

In Northern Georgia there is a hiking trail, the longest in the world (about 2200 miles) in which 2 million participate every year. It is called the ‘Appalachian Trail’. Its entire trail is funded through hikers who upon seeing its benefits funded for laying the path so that the next set of hikers could enjoy the experience.

Vipassana works on the same guidelines. Seeing the benefits derived from this program the participants fund for the next set of participants to come and enjoy the course. It’s a classic case of ‘paying forward’ and has worked well for many years.

Which is the right approach is difficult for me to decide as they lie on the two ends of the spectrum.

One approach talks of winning, accumulating, in this recognition starved pleasure seeking world. It talks about maximizing your pleasures and minimizing your pain through accessing different states of the mind.

Tony Robbins through his approach has helped many suicide cases, depression victims and traumatic patients come out of their state. ‘I am not a Guru’ – a documentary on Netflix shows him helping a women who was physically abused lead a better quality of life and near divorce cases now lead ecstatic lives.

The other approach talks about dropping the mind, leading a life ‘devoid’ of misery, craving and aversion, not seeking attention and moving from breathe to breathe with compassion.

This approach by Buddha has transformed continents; generations and even the prisoners in Tihar jail have reformed themselves after going through this course.

Which approach is right, it is for you to decide.

Is Mephistopheles listening?

WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS?

It was a 10 km race organized by a leading hospital in Trichy. My wife Savy who had been assiduously preparing for it was pumped up. She was sure of winning it.

The running began. As there were several age categories, the volunteers split them into different batches. Savy was in the age group of 35 to 49. To her surprise, this group consisted of 3 female runners. The announcer quipped that as there were only 3 runners, all of them were bound to get a prize. Savy put all her effort and ran as fast as she could. She beat the other 2 competitors by a big distance.

When she arrived at the finishing line, the organizers congratulated her for having come 5th. Surprised aren’t you? How could someone come 5th in a race in which only 3 ran? Obviously, the first four had an early start by camouflaging themselves in the earlier group of runners and thus winning the coveted prize. Yes, the first four cheated, but what happened next came as a bigger shock.

When Savy posted it this on the social media, none of them… none of them responded. The organizers turned a deaf ear, though videos could provide evidence. The participants turned a blind eye. Who would go against these winners, some of them well to do socialites. Some even commented ‘Just forget it. This is all a part and parcel of life’.

There is a quote that says – your neighbor is getting harassed and you keep watching, don’t worry your turn is next.

But aren’t we a society used to taking turns. We turn on the water taps oblivious to the water shortage in the city. We dump garbage mercilessly, unconcerned about the spread of dengue in the city. Our exporters mix brick powder with chilli powder hoping to make an extra buck and riders cut across lines unmindful of the suffering caused to others.

In flats, owners in the ground floor don’t want to pay for the lift and owners at the top are disregardful of the fact that the leakage from the tank is corroding the beams of the ground floor.

Savy is stupid. She could have planned a strategy of starting earlier with another group or running midway through the race, thanks to the excellent communication networks or she could have taken a transport for half the distance or just stood at the finishing line and effortlessly won the race.

Ultimately winning is what matters, who cares how you win?

And losers don’t cry, you did not have the sense to make it. Then we proudly stand on pedestals and proclaim that we belong to the land of Harishchandras and talk about Lord Rama’s integrity.

Hindi film director Guru Dutt, who incidentally committed suicide had rightly said – yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye tho kya hai. What is the point in winning the world if you are going to lose the soul?

As parents and heads of families, what are the four winners teaching their children. And if we as parents when we don’t have the guts to speak up and say everything is chalta hai, what are we telling the next generation?

Are you going to let your soul speak or let the duniya take over?

This is Shiv signing off from S&S Family First urging the great Bharata race to speak up.
